While chocolate may be delicious and an excellent snack for any time of the day, many brands and types of chocolate also hold a range of serious disadvantages for the human body.
For the purpose of this article, we would like to focus on three chocolates that are a favorite among a majority of chocolate eaters – Twix, Bounty, and Snickers. We would also like to introduce you to healthier versions of these chocolates that you can make in the comfort of your home.
Healthier versions hold many benefits and even takes advantage of some of the best brain foods to provide nutrients to the body that can be beneficial. Who knew eating chocolate could be good for your health?
Before we introduce you to the healthier versions of these chocolate bars, let us take a look at the nutritional facts of these bars first.
Bounty Bar, manufactured by Mars Inc, contains around 135 calories in one 29g chocolate bar. The chocolate bar also contains 28mg of sodium, 18g of carbs, 14g sugars, 3mg of cholesterol and 7g of total fats. Apart from the bad parts, the chocolate bar also holds some protein, iron, and calcium.
One serving of Twix contains 12g of fat, 5mg of cholesterol, 100mg sodium, and 34g carbs, of which 1g is dietary fiber and 24g accounts for sugar content.
When we turn our attention towards Snickers chocolate bars, we see that one serving contains 12g of fat, 5mg cholesterol, 120mg sodium, 27g sugars and 1g dietary fiber.
While these chocolate bars do contain a small amount of calcium, iron, and protein, it is important to realize that the other ingredients contained within them are mostly harmful to the body. If you are looking for a way of eating chocolate for weight loss, then turning towards these popular chocolate choices would serve the opposite purpose.
Now that we’ve determined the nutritional facts of these popular chocolate bars let’s turn our focus towards the effects of the content that are provided by these bars.
While the nutritional facts printed on the labels of these chocolate bars simply announced a total sugar content value, Laboratory Talk reports that these sugars usually include sucrose, fructose and glucose sugars. They also report that lactose content is also present, which is derived from milk while the chocolate is processed.
Healthy Snicker Bars Recipe
This recipe contains whole ingredients that are all-natural and does not contain the harmful substances found in the original snicker bar. It does not contain dairy and is completely free of gluten.
Serves: 8 Full-Sized Chocolate Bars
Time: 10 Minutes
1 cup of coconut oil (virgin kind)
1/2 cup of cocoa powder (organic)
1/4 cup of maple syrup (organic)
1 cup of Medjool dates (pre-soaked and the pitted kind)
3 tablespoons of agave nectar
2 tablespoons of almond butter
1/2 teaspoon of sea salt
1 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
2 tablespoons of coconut oil
1 cup of raw peanuts
To make the chocolate bars, start by adding all of the chocolate ingredients into a food processor.
Blend the mixture until smooth, then set it aside.
Now blend all of the caramel ingredients in the food processor until the mixture is smooth.
Use a silicone mold or any other preferred tin and coat the sides with a layer of the chocolate mixture – ensure the coating is fairly thick.
Add a layer of caramel and then top the caramel with some of the raw peanuts.
Now, simply add a final chocolate layer to the top and add to the freezer for approximately one hour.
Paleo Bounty Bars Recipe
These bounty bars are delicious and use a mixture of organic ingredients to provide a healthier alternative to the commercially available bounty bars. They also do not contain any dairy and may even taste better than the original thing.
1/4 cup of melted coconut oil
1/4 cup of organic cocoa powder
1 tablespoon of honey
1 1/2 cup of shredded coconut (unsweetened)
1/4 cup of coconut cream
2 tablespoons of honey
1/4 cup of coconut milk (full fat)
With these bars, you will first prepare the filling and then dip the prepared fillings in the chocolate.
Start by mixing all of the ingredients for the filling in a blender. Be sure to stop before the mixture becomes too smooth.
Line the filling on a baking sheet in rectangular shapes. You should press them firmly and then add them to the freezer for an hour.
Before removing these pieces from the freezer, add the chocolate ingredients to a pot over low heat.
Whisk the ingredients until they are thoroughly combined.
Once combined, remove the pot from heat and allow the mixture to cool down slightly.
Now, simply dip the rectangles in the chocolate, roll it around until completely covered in chocolate and place them back on the baking sheet.
Add to the freezer for another ten minutes and enjoy.
Homemade Twix Bars Recipe
Twix bars are a little more complicated than the others as they have a crust below the filling, but they are very delicious, and this recipe is worth a try. This recipe is great for individuals following a paleo diet and is also gluten free.
1/2 a cup of almond butter
1/3 of a cup of organic maple syrup
1/3 melted coconut oil
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt
2/3 of a cup of coconut flour
1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt
1/3 cup solid coconut oil
3 tablespoons of organic maple syrup
The Crust: We will start with the crust as it needs to be baked in the oven.
Preheat your oven to around 350 degrees (Fahrenheit)
Then grease a pan (about eight by eight inches) with some coconut oil.
Add the salt and coconut flour in a bowl, then combine the two.
Add maple syrup to the mixture and combine, followed by coconut oil.
Form a large ball with the mixture and press it into the greased pan.
Bake the crust for about 10 minutes – take it out of the over once the edges are golden brown.
Add all of the ingredients into a saucepan and stir over a low heat.
Keep stirring until all of the ingredients have been properly combined, then pour the mixture over the crust and add to the freezer.
While the filling is busy setting over the crust in the freezer, pour all of the chocolate ingredients into a pan and whisk them together.
Once the part in the freezer has set, pour the chocolate part over and place back into the freezer.
Once your Twix bar has cooled down, simply cut it into slices and enjoy.
